Nikon D40 and D70 comparison side by side

Saturday Nov 1, 2008

Nikon d40 being compared to Nikon d70 Nikon d200 and Leica M7. This was done to show how small the Nikon d40 is compared to other cameras. This also shows the D40 with the Nikon 18-200mm Vr lens which is hard to find on the internet so I put some pics on. There is also plenty of room for your fingers with this lens which has been a concern with such a small camera but i have found it fine.

Nikon D70 Outfit Digital Camera
Designed for a broad range of customers, from novices to serious and experienced photo enthusiasts, the D70 allows photographers to easily adopt digital technology into their existing camera system, or to begin building a system that will bring ongoing enjoyment in the future.

The D70 employs the popular Nikon DX Format sensor and Nikon F lens mount design. This maintains seamless compatibility with all AF Nikkor lenses while allowing photographers to take full advantage of high quality DX Nikkor lenses designed exclusively for Nikon’s D-series digital SLR cameras and optimized to achieve outstanding center-to-edge-to-corner image quality.

The D70 is ready to use the instant it is turned on. The 5-area autofocus system is fast and precise, and includes an AF-assist illuminator to help maximize performance even in dark shooting conditions.

Controls are located for easy access and smooth operation. Menus are presented clearly and in plain language on the large LCD monitor. All the camera’s systems have been optimized to deliver quick response. And, innovative shooting options have been added to simplify the photographic process, whether controlled manually or via advanced automatic operation.

Shutter speeds of 30 to 1/8,000 sec. ensure full creative control. The built-in auto pop-up flash can synchronize at shutter speeds of up to 1/500 sec. for great fill flash effects. Sensitivity can be set between ISO 200 to 1600 or controlled automatically across the same range of settings to maximize available light.

A 6.1 effective megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor featuring wider dynamic range and a higher signal to noise ratio produces 3,008 x 2,000-pixel images with high resolution and superbly sharp details suited for making large prints, or for cropping for creative detail.

The D70’s advanced System LSI processor is programmed for next generation performance to produce the finest in vivid colors and clarity, while maximizing the speed of file compression, memory buffer handling, simultaneous recording of JPEG and NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) files, and near-instant LCD image display.

Nikon’s acclaimed 3D Color Matrix Meter with 1,005-pixel sensor assures accurate auto TTL white balance. Six different manual white balance modes, preset white balance, and white balance bracketing are also available for full creative control. Exposure compensation and flash exposure compensation combine with auto exposure bracketing to further aid in achieving the perfect shot.

Diverse playback options, versatile custom settings, a USB interface for easy connectivity or direct printing to any PictBridge compatible printer, and a bevy of other features packed into the lightest and most compact Nikon digital SLR camera to date make the D70 the best performing camera in its class.

The Nikon D70 beautifully combines the best of digital technology with quick and efficient camera handling. Add to this the advantages of Nikon’s Total Imaging System, from high-quality AF, AF-S and DX Nikkor lenses and advanced Speedlight technologies to powerful software that will empower and inspire the shutterbug in everyone, and you are sure to enjoy Nikon digital SLR photography and superb pictures that are vivid and accurate in color, and crisp and clean in detail.

Just got a Nikon D40 – are these lenses any good?

Friday Sep 3, 2010

I just bought a Nikon D40 which I’m very happy with it. I wan’t to buy a wide angle and a telephoto lense and see some great deals on lenses on Ebay. I’m a little hesitant to buy them off of Ebay because I’m afraid they will be junk quality.

Here are some examples of what’s out there:

I am by no means an expert in photography and would appreciate your input as to what to look for in a lens and what makes a good lens vs. a crap lens.

thanks in advance!

DON’T DO IT!

It’s not the Ebay factor, it’s that those "lenses" are not lenses at all and will take a perfectly good optic, probably the kit lens that came with your camera and turn it into crap. Anything that screws onto the end of your existing lens that is not a simple filter should be avoided at all costs.

By the way, your camera should have come with at least an 18-75 lens so why do you NEED more than that? You won’t get much wider and as far as telephoto, well, make due with what you have or invest in some of the less expensive 75-300ish lenses out there.

Actually, Nikon makes a 55-200 you can get for around $170 and that’s about as cheap as you’re gonna get.

Unfortunately, decent lenses cost money but cheap lenses cost you memories, lost photo opportunities and will not let you get the most from your good camera.

Don’t go cheap on this. You’ll regret it.

How many pics can you take with a Nikon D70? – As in its lifespan? I’m buying a 2nd hand one!?

Friday Sep 3, 2010

I’m buying a second hand Nikon D70 and was told to be careful, especially when it comes to how many pictures the previous owner has taken as some cameras have a lifespan? This was news to me!
What would be a reasonable answer to listen for from the owner when i ask him how many pictures he’s taken?

(My current camera i’m sure i’ve taken in excess of 60,000 pictures in its lifetime!!!)

thousands

What lens(es) filters are recommended for a Nikon D70s?

Friday Sep 3, 2010

Really all you need are a Polarizer (circular, NOT linear) and a Skylight 1A (uncoated) or 1B (coated) filter or a Haze/UV filter. I’ve used Tiffen, B+W, Hoya and Minolta filters for many many years. In fact, I use a Tiffen Polarizer I bought in 1972.

Keep either the Skylight or Haze filter on your lens at all times until you want to use the polarizer. This protects your front element and keeps it clean so you only have to clean the filter. Filters are cheaper than lenses so replacing one is less traumatic to your budget.

A Skylight filter will remove the bluish tint seen in open shade or in snow or distant mountains. The Haze filter removes much of the atmospheric haze in scenics. The Polarizer will darken a blue sky and removes glare/reflections from water, snow, sand, glass and painted metal – but not polished metal.

A gradient Neutral Density (ND) filter can come in handy when the sky is blah and you’d like it darker without compromising the rest of the exposure. Ignore any suggestions to buy a full ND filter – since you can change your ISO at will you don’t need it.

If you have several lenses, each should have its own protective filter on all the time. However, to save money, you can buy a Polarizer to fit the largest filter diameter (perhaps 72mm – you can find the size on the front of the lens) and then buy "step-up" rings so you can use the 72mm diameter filter on a 55mm or 62mm diameter. Be careful, though, when using step-up rings on extreme wide-angle lenses like a 10-28mm since they might cause vignetting (darkening of the corners of your image) at the widest setting. In that case you might have to invest in a thin-mount polarizer just for that lens.

With the filter effects available in the numerous editing programs the filters listed are all you’ll ever need.

You might enjoy a visit to AIRC-Adorama Imaging Resource Center. Click on SFX Photography for a look at some special effects you can try with Photoshop.
